‘Eat your barbecue, it’s good for you!

In what may be the best diet-related health news of all time (at least until scientists discover that beer makes you live forever), a study at the University of Ontario has found antioxidants which can boost the body’s immune system are present in the herbs and spices used for . . . barbecue sauce.

The research team analyzed seven different popular sauces and marinades available at supermarkets.

The sauces contained herbs and spices as primary ingredients and included such varieties and flavors as jerk sauce, garlic and herb, roasted red pepper, sesame ginger teriyaki and others. Cooking reduces the antioxidant effect by about 50 percent, but even after barbecuing, the sauces still contain “significant” levels of antioxidants.
So fire up the grill and get healthy.

Volunteer of the Year

Two of our wonderful homebound meal drivers, Dottie and Charlie Keller from the CHEER at Long Neck Activity Center, are in the running for the Meals On Wheels Volunteer of theCharlie and Dottie Keller Year award. And, as expected, CHEER is very proud of them. The Kellers have been volunteers with CHEER for nearly 10 years delivering meals in the Angola and Millsboro areas. Not only do they deliver meals, but they also do the little extras that insure the homebound people they see are ok.

The winner of this year's American Volunteer Contest will win
MOWAA's annual Jody Tepedino NIcholo Award and his/her nominating Meals On Wheels program will be presented a check for $1,000. This is an excellent fundraiser for CHEER and you can help. This national contest will be decided by popular vote and your vote will count.

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Click on this link http://www.mowaa.org/americanvolunteer,

  2. Scroll down to their names and vote.

  3. That's all there is to it and you help CHEER at the same time.
